Marseille-Provence International Airport is built beside this old agricultural town situated on the shores of Berre Lagoon. The first aeroplanes arrived at Marignane in 1920. The heart of the town itself is modest in scale. The town’s fine-looking castle is of mediaeval origin, but dates mainly from the 17th century; it still has some of its original interior decoration. It now houses the Town hall and the town’s Museum of archaeology, traditions and local history. The Romanesque Church of Saint Nicolas is an interesting reminder of the town’s mediaeval past.
