Top farms breeding surprising animals

Have you ever seen an American bison or a real reindeer? Head for some surprising farms with uncommon animals to meet all sorts of species. Each visit, labelled “Bienvenue à la Ferme”, promises a unique and memorable adventure.

La Ferme Béridon and its horned beasts

In Auzet, in a quiet little corner of the Alpes de Haute-Provence, at the foot of the mountain, Ferme Béridon, labelled Bienvenue à la Ferme, is hidden away. It’s a place for horned animals of all sizes. Make the most of a guided tour of the farm and the big park to meet some horned beasts: the big American bison with their not-so-long, but certainly very tough horns, mountain sheep with their incredible spiralling horns, little reindeer and their antlers shaped like tree branches, dappled bucks with their antlers which are like two wings on their heads, and also the king of the forest: the deer and his magnificent antlers that he wears with such dignity. During the visit you’ll certainly come across other animals such as lamas or ponies, and maybe Father Christmas’s elve’s house

La Ferme du Col – feels like Noah’s Ark feel

In the Hautes-Alpes, there is a place which is a serious rival to the myth of Noah’s Ark: la Ferme du Col, in Jarjayes. Labelled Bienvenue à la Ferme, the farm has all sorts of animals and, for some, really out of the ordinary. For example, you might come across long-haired Scottish cows, emus, alpacas, lamas, golden pheasants, Vietnamese miniature pigs, Angora rabbits, 4-horned rams… and many others… The farm is open all year round for educational tours and donkey or pony rides and also for an introduction to its products made on the spot. For the more affectionate, there are even « stroking areas » for a moment filled with tenderness with the farm animals.

La Ferme Lou Craven and its miniature world

The smaller the cuter. La Ferme Lou Craven, labelled Bienvenue à la Ferme, won’t contradict you. In Moulès, Cédric and Angélique Garanion breed Ushant sheep, known to be the smallest sheep in the world! Rarely taller than 50 cm at withers, they form little herds of black and white wool. Just next door on their La Souleïade donkey farm, Cédric and Angélique also breed miniature horses and donkeys. The mares and stallions are registered with the AMHA (American Miniature Horse Association) and must not measure more than 86cm at withers. As for the donkeys, they are of the Sarde race and generally measure between 74 and 85cm at withers. Come and measure these lovely little animals for yourself!

An immersive experience at Le Moulin d’Espagne

In Ginasservis, a real nature and animal lover welcomes you to Le Moulin d’Espagne. This educational farm, labelled Bienvenue à la Ferme, offers both unusual accommodations, such as Mongolian yurts, Wigwam tents, a treehouse… and fun activities specially concocted for groups of children. And, of course, Le Moulin d’Espagne is also home to animals from all over the world! Go round the farm and meet mountain sheep, impressive yacks, sublime peacocks, lamas, donkeys, chickens, cows, rabbits… You might even be able to give a bottle to a hungry baby donkey. Whatever you do, you’ll leave the place feeling peaceful and filled with knowledge of the rural world and life in the country.

La Bergeronnette, the balls of wool farm

And what about some softness ? In Lagarde d’Apt, in the Vaucluse, Bruno Bonnet welcomes you to La Bergeronnette, which is defined as a « balls of wool farm”. Nestling between the Ventoux and the Luberon, this farm labelled Bienvenue à la Ferme specializes in the production of mohair and alpaca wool for making knitted and woven clothes. Bruno Bonnet breeds alpacas and Angora goats in ecological farming to obtain wool. His herds enjoy the good life on the surrounding prairies and small woods and are sheared to obtain the precious thread which will be used to make pretty quality clothes such as pullovers, hats, scarves, ponchos, socks… in all sorts of different colours! Have a look around the shop to see if something takes your fancy.
