This fort dominated the Saint-Georges castle which it preceded on the same ridge at the site of a collet giving access to the upper gate of the village and includes a tower, perhaps with an open throat, controlling this gate.

The Salines district was first of all a refuge for the first inhabitants who found shelter in the caves of the Massuli (future Salines district) protected by the rocky bar descending from Dourinn to the Roya.
Known as Château des Salines or Château de Salles or Castel del Sal, it was located on the Iter Publicum (the Great Public Road) before the construction of the Grand Ducal Road from Turin to Nice, which preceded the construction of the Royal Road.
