This medieval castle is part of the network of fortified buildings that watch over and protect the Durance valley between Sisteron and Tallard. Interactive kiosk in the village to discover anecdotes about this castle. Private castle, no public access
The origins of its construction are obscure, but it was from the 11th century onwards that most of the castles of this type appeared in the region.
It is a military building with imposing defensive elements that can withstand a long-term siege, as evidenced by the importance of the cistern.
Placed on a rocky spur, the site developed gradually from the Roman period to the end of the Middle Ages.
Originally there was only a simple tower. Then, from a first level with barrel vaults, the building was raised. The fact that this vault is not anchored in the walls of the adjoining building, but glued against it, means that the vault dates from this period.
To the south, a door leads to the first room. This opening was made through the vault and is therefore posterior to it. On the second level, the present rectangular space was originally divided by a dividing wall, which can still be seen in the eastern wall. To the left of the dividing wall there was a large fireplace. Various doors opened to the east into another building, which has now disappeared. This building was built on four levels.
