12th century
also known as Sainte-Agathe.
Located in the Hauture district, close to the Saint-Césaire monastery, this Provençal Romanesque church was once a parish church.
Built in the 12th century, only part of the church remains today, but it has preserved a remarkable cul-de-four vaulted apse, with exterior decoration inspired by Antiquity.
As with other monuments in the city, its apparent burial testifies to the difference in ground level between the present and medieval periods. It may even have been intended to preserve the early Christian level. On the exterior, the semi-circular chevet is adorned with fluted pilasters with acanthus-leaf capitals, terminating in an overhanging cornice.
This decoration is directly inspired by ancient monuments, notably the amphitheatre.
The apse, which is now half-buried, is due to the fact that the ground has risen since it was built, as can also be seen in the nearby church of Saint-Blaise.
Two bays remain of the nave, one of which is partly built into the neighbouring house.
Two doors in the north and south walls, as well as a window, are further evidence of the difference in level between the ground at the time of construction and the ground today.
The building is particularly noteworthy for its apse, which is vaulted in a cul-de-four style, the ribs of which end in capitals around the keystone, once decorated with a lamb.
The wall of the apse is decorated with arcatures, some of which have been restored.
