Situated 12 km from Aix-en-Provence town centre, on wooded land in a magnificent setting of Provençal forest made up of Aleppo pines, umbrella pines, evergreen oaks, pubescent oaks and junipers.
The town of Aix-en-Provence first envisaged the creation of a cemetery back in 1975. The estate of Grand Saint-Jean, bequeathed by the family of Estienne de Saint-Jean to the town, was selected as a suitable site: 45 of the 200 hectares of the estate were reserved for this purpose. A mixed cemetery was created, with traditional sections and landscaped sections, preserving as many of the existing trees as possible.
Today, with its 8 000 plots and its exceptional landscapes, the cemetery of Grand Saint-Jean is classed among the most beautiful landscaped cemeteries in Europe.
Electric buggies are available for elderly people or people with reduced mobility and the cemetery is accessible to people with reduced mobility.
The cemetery is regularly used as a film set for television series.
