Located at the entrance to the old port, the 2 buildings of the former sanitary locker still stand on the north quay, just a stone's throw from Fort Saint-Jean and the Mucem! They bear witness to a whole part of Marseille's maritime history and port activity.
Although the sanitary control system in the port of Marseille first appeared during an epidemic in the 15th century, the regulations were put in place on a permanent basis in the 18th century. The organization was spread over several sites in the Arenc, Pomègues, Frioul and Vieux Port districts.
The Consigne, headquarters of the Intendance Sanitaire, was responsible for controlling ships. Built at the entrance to the port in 1719, it was enlarged in 1803 and 1827, and a 2nd symmetrical building was added in the last quarter of the 19th century.
This fine architectural ensemble runs alongside the north quay basin, and visitors can still admire its facade as they stroll from the Old Port to the Mucem. A few steps further on, a leap in time leads to the Station Sanitaire Maritime de Marseille, which continues the story 200 years later. Designed by Pouillon, this building now houses the Musée Regards de Provence.
