Barrême is known the world over by geologists who regularly use the term "Barremien". The Louis Maurel Collection has been bequeathed to the Commune. The exhibition can be viewed during Town Hall opening hours.
During what geologists call the Secondary Era, between 250 and 65 million years ago, Barrême, like all of Provence, was covered by the sea. This sea, or rather these seas, were populated by animals called ammonites. We have preserved their fossils. Here, the ammonites are particularly beautiful, sometimes very rare, with unrolled forms. We treasure them as a souvenir of the sea and for the pleasure of our eyes.
