Built in 1897, the Riviera is one of the first palace hotels in the city. Swiss hotelier Widmer buys land on the Annonciade hill with the intention of building a sumptuous establishment surrounded by a large park. It was designed by the architect Abel Glena and the painter Guillaume Cerutti-Maori. The extension program planned by the same architect in 1910, is carried out by his collaborator, Alfred Auguste Marsang, and includes a three-storey elevation and the addition of a west wing. The Palace then consists of 250 rooms. In 1920, new outbuildings were added: an employee house in the form of a wing added to the east end of the main body; a cookhouse built at the rear of the hotel, near the kitchens; laundry facilities on the upper terrace, near the water cisterns; the construction of a 300-seat performance hall. In 1958, the establishment closed its doors and was sold as apartments.
