The fort de la Grande Maye, at an altitude of 2,420 m, was built between 1886 and 1888. It comprises a blockhouse, ammunition stores, shelters, barracks and batteries.
The main structure of the Grande Maye fort is the blockhouse, now abandoned. It was an observation and protection point for the surrounding forts and positions, with batteries facing east and firing on the southern slopes of the Gondran, the Bletonnet valley and the foot of the Izoard.
In 1873, the Defense Committee decided to set up batteries on the Grande Maye ridge, extending the position of Fort de la Croix de Bretagne.
Originally armed with 95 mm Lahitolle system cannons, these batteries could be fitted with more powerful guns when, in August 1908, it was found that an 1877 155 long gun, weighing 6 tons and with 8 horses, could be hoisted to the Grande Maye. The fort was the rear base for these advances.
The planned garrison in 1899 was : 3 officers - 250 men. Artillery: 1 officer - 100 men + 20 auxiliaries - 2 telegraph operators.
All these remains are freely accessible, but the interior of the works remains dangerous. Access is only possible on foot.
