Place De la République, 13260 Cassis
The 18th-century fountain is listed in the Monuments Historiques inventory. It was inspired by the more monumental fountain built in Paris on the Place des Victoires to commemorate the fountain of Louis XIV.
The present-day fountain, built recently, is the heir to an older structure built in 1690, which in 1651 reproduced a Parisian fountain built in 1686 to celebrate the victories of Louis XIV. It was so finely executed that, on seeing it, visiting Parisian travellers noted in their correspondence "who has seen the Paris fountain, if he has not seen the Cassis fountain, has seen nothing". The expression, transformed by Frédéric Mistral in the early 20th century, remains and has become emblematic of the village. According to local history, this original fountain was accidentally destroyed in 1785 by a Catalan fisherman who climbed to the top to get a better view of the St. John's Day festivities.
