This refuge owes its name to the arid, uncultivated land surrounding it: a "harmas" in Provençal. In 1878, entomologist Jean-Henri Fabre settled here. It was here that he wrote his world-famous work: Les souvenirs entomologiques. Today, a veritable Eden has replaced the arid land. Here, over five hundred species of plant live side by side. In a pond, aquatic fauna and flore thrive. As for the house, both home and study, it houses his watercolors and herbariums, as well as his collections of insects pinned in glass boxes. To visit the Harmas is to meet the scientist and poet Jean-Henri Fabre, who, although famous as far away as Japan, paradoxically remains too confidential in France.
