This stele honors the birthplace of Jean-Baptiste Cotta, who was born and died in Tende (1668-1738) and gave his name to this street. A member of the Augustinian order, Cotta was a major author of Italian sacred poetry.
He was admitted to Italy's most illustrious academies; Genoa, Siena, Viterbo, Rome and Naples admired his eloquence and proclaimed him a famous orator. He taught sacred poetry at the universities of Florence.
In 1712, he had a collection of poems printed in Nice, written with great fire, purity and style, and never wanted to leave his homeland, despite the brilliant offers of Victor-Amédée, who had agreed to the dedication of his works.
After successively filling several posts in his order, of which he even became vicar general, he returned to his homeland in 1733, where he died on May 31, 1738.
