Built in the 18th century on the banks of the Etang de Berre, away from the town center, this washhouse would have been reserved for the sick. Inscribed on the supplementary list of Historic Monuments in 2019, it is recognized as one of the oldest in Provence.
Built on the site of the former Ragues fountain, the Lavoir des Contagieux (Contagious Washing House) is very well preserved. Although it was once used by carders to wash sheep's wool, its name recalls its exclusive use during epidemics, notably the plague.
Built of stone, it takes the form of an arcaded hall, with a semi-circular vault and solid buttresses. The stone slab gable roof houses a long longitudinal basin divided into two troughs.
This south-western part of the commune is home to an exceptional wetland area. This is a double reason to extend your visit to Saint-Chamas to the edge of the pond, as the educational trail that crosses this natural area is accessible from the Lavoir des Contagieux,
