Erected alongside the N202, this monument honors the memory of the 11 Côte d'Azur Resistance fighters cruelly gunned down on June 11, 1944. The Digne Gestapo pretended to set them free, but shot them in the back as they scattered across the fields.
In Saint-Julien de Verdon, we remember. The horror of the tragedy is engraved in stone: "Here, on June 11 1944, 11 French patriots from the Resistance groups Corps Francs de la Libération and Combat in the Nice and Puget-Théniers area were cowardly shot and robbed.
Protected by a hedge of cypress trees, the 11 slabs form a Lorraine cross. At its base, a line of cobblestones forms the V of Victory. This symbol of Free France, emblematic of the fight for freedom, recalls the courage and commitment of these men to resist occupation and the Vichy regime.
