The church was built around the 11th century. It is the oldest monument in the area and has been a listed building since 1959. With the Pentitents Chapel it forms a beautiful architectural complex at the heart of the village of La Grave.
The first religious building of the canton, the Church of Notre-Dame de l'Assomption dominates the village of La Grave. Two specificities make it a unique heritage site. Its Romanesque style marked by the Lombard influence, but also the exceptional setting, which seems to have been chosen to raise the heart of the faithful towards the sublime heights of the Meije glaciers.
