"An oppidum, in ancient times designated a kind of citadel, a fortified natural eminence and therefore suitable for defense."
"Among the oppida established in Ligurian Provence is the very strategic one of Saint-Marcel. The site of the Baous de Saint-Marcel plateau covers three hectares at an altitude of 167 meters: it occupies a platform protected by steep cliffs on the south and west sides, while on the north side the land slopes sharply. The oppidum was built like a real fortified village. The dwellings were built next to each other. The floors were made of pebbles bound with clay, and the streets were very narrow. The presence of springs at the foot of the cliffs also explains the choice of this place and at least one well was established in this fortified enclosure which offers us the most beautiful visible archaeological site of Marseilles after that of the vestiges of the Stock Exchange.
H. Hardouin.
