The Baisse Saint-Véran infantry fortification is one of the fortifications built on the Authion massif. Designed in the 1930s, it was unfinished when the Second World War broke out, and abandoned after the fighting.
A natural barrier to the Nice Pre-Alps, the Authion massif has been recognized for its strategic position since the 18th century. In the late 19th century, it was the focus of a road infrastructure and fortification program.
The Baisse Saint-Véran project saw the light of day between 1937 and 1940. A defensive structure, the concrete and reinforced concrete building rises over 2 levels on a trapezoidal plan.
The first floor is the fighting level, while the basement is reserved for storage and shelter.
The ridgeline location of this military block stands out against the silence of the panorama. A solemn beauty pervades the site, blending the drama of history with the grandeur of nature.
