Musée-bibliothèque Paul Arbaud, 2a rue du 4 Septembre, 13100 Aix-en-Provence
Paul-Arbaud, a scholar, devoted his life to assembling a significant collection of objects and books, remarkable both in quantity and quality. Upon his death, he bequeathed not only this collection but also the mansion that housed it to the Academy of Sciences, Agriculture, Arts and Literature of Aix-en-Provence. The Academy of Aix is a member of the National Conference of Academies of Sciences, Letters and Arts, which is itself under the aegis of the Institut de France.
The museum's collection of objects consists of some beautiful pieces, including 18th-century Provençal earthenware, a 14th-century Flemish triptych and portraits of the Mirabeau family.
The library, with its 20,000 books, 2,000 manuscripts and private archives (notably those of the Mirabeau family), attracts researchers from all walks of life who come to consult its works. An important iconographic collection and old maps and plans complete the collection.
Since its opening, the museum-library has received numerous bequests that have added to its collections, such as those of Lucas de Montigny, Marcel Provence and Jérôme Duranti-La Calade.
