Description

The Domaine du Rayol is a 20-hectare protected natural area owned by the Conservatoire du Littoral, comprising 13 hectares of scrubland and 7 hectares of gardens evocative of Mediterranean climates around the world, which can be visited every day, all year round.

Designed by landscape architect Gilles Clément, Le Jardin des Méditerranées invites visitors on a journey through the Mediterranean landscapes of the world: California, Chile, South Africa, Australia, the Mediterranean basin, the Canary Islands, as well as drier or subtropical climates such as those of Mexico, Asia, New Zealand and subtropical America.

“Exploring this garden is like experiencing some of the emotions felt by a botanist-explorer travelling the globe!”

The Domaine du Rayol, much more than just a garden, offers: • Daily ‘discovery’ guided tours, • Themed tours, family activities and a coastal walk, • Training courses for individuals and professionals, • Temporary exhibitions and meetings with artists in residence, • An event to mark the change of each season, • Musical evenings (classical and Mediterranean) in summer.

On site, you’ll find: • ‘Le Café des Jardiniers’, a restaurant and tea room serving reimagined Mediterranean dishes and flavours from around the world. • ‘La Librairie des Jardiniers’, one of France’s largest specialist bookshops for nature and gardening, with over 4,000 titles. • An ‘ecological, sustainable and desirable’ nursery, operating in accordance with a charter for environmentally responsible production.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION Opening times and access • Open all year round, every day (except 25 December). • Recommended duration of visit: at least 1½ hours to explore the 5 km of paths and discover the diversity of the Mediterranean gardens. • Two free car parks nearby: Avenue Jacques Chirac and Avenue Courmes.

Owned by the Conservatoire du Littoral, this protected natural area lies at the foot of the Maures massif, opposite the islands of the Port-Cros National Park. Renowned landscape gardener Gilles Clément has designed a garden featuring a mosaic of landscapes evoking the flora of the world's Mediterranean climates. It's a real invitation to travel, where all the senses are stimulated.
Since its creation in 1989, the garden has been managed ecologically. A place of education, it can be explored freely with the help of a map, an audioguide or guided tours. Children can take part in fun activities that introduce them to ecological gardening and raise their awareness of environmental preservation, both on land and in the sea.
Every season, Le Jardin des Méditerranées reveals its beauty and special features; in winter, it takes on a singular appeal with the blossoming of some forty different species of mimosa and other plants native to the southern hemisphere. The Domaine du Rayol is also recognized as an LPO Refuge and benefits from the "Esprit Parc National - Port-Cros" label.
