Born in Toulon on December 17, 1883, Jules Auguste Muraire, known as Raimu, was one of the great "sacred monsters" of French cinema in the 1930s, a pioneer of talking pictures discovered by Sacha Guitry and later Marcel Pagnol's favorite performer. Raimu is best remembered for his portrayal of César, Marius' father, in the "Marseilles trilogy": "Marius", "Fanny" and "César", and of the deceived baker in "La Femme du boulanger".
