The 551st Parachute Infantry Battalion entered Draguignan on August 16, 1944. It was joined the following day by elements of the 36th Infantry Division. A temporary American cemetery was established here on August 17, 1944. The French government handed over the operation of the cemetery as a permanent burial ground.
