Saint Anthony: Fernando de Bulhoes was born around 1195 in Lisbon and died in June 1231 in Padua.
He was related to the family of Godfrey of Bouillon, the first king of Jerusalem, a branch of which was established in Portugal; he was very learned and had a great talent for oratory. In 1220, he joined the Order of Francis of Assisi where he was given the name of Anthony. He was canonised in May 1232 by Pope Gregory IX. He became the national saint of the Portuguese and the patron saint of sailors, shipwrecked people and prisoners. He is sometimes invoked to find lost objects. He cures herpes, known as Saint Anthony's fire, pigs and horses. Legend has it that he is often accompanied by a devilish boar which he is said to have tamed. He is celebrated on 17 January.
