This 4th-century chapel served as the parish church of Névache until the 15th century. The polychrome wooden statue of Saint Hippolytus (1612) was housed in the Church of Saint-Marcellin before it was hidden from view while awaiting the creation of a copy.
Before the development of Névache, known as Ville-Haute in the Middle Ages, the main settlement was concentrated in Le Roubion (on the left bank of the stream of the same name), between the chapels of Saint-Hippolyte and Saint-Sauveur, at the junction of the Col de l'Echelle, the Thûres, and the road to Briançon.
Saint-Hippolyte was the main parish until the 16th century. The existence of an older place of worship is attested. An ancient thatched-roof chapel was enlarged and covered with a vaulted ceiling before a sacristy was added to it. Its consecration to Saint-Hippolyte dates back to 1065.
The current building dates from the 17th century and was restored in 2007. Excavations uncovered several skeletons, fragments of tuff columns, and charcoal, while dendrochronological analysis enabled the dating of the beams used in the construction of the roof structure (1655 for the main beam).
