At an altitude of 1,200 m, the village of Authon was built around the church. Saint Martha Chapel was the site of numerous miracles.
It welcomed stillborn children who died unbaptised. They returned to life for a short moment when the priest spoke the ritual words. They were then baptised by the officiant.
Saint Martha also delivered Tarascon from the Tarasque, a small greenish animal that she held on a leash of ribbon.
The Hospitaler monks of Saint John of Jerusalem, the lords of the manor as early as the Middle Ages, had a château built opposite the church.
