Located on the road to Menton, the chapel dedicated to Saint Roch is placed at the entrance of the village to protect the population from the various epidemics. A demonstration on 5 August has perpetuated the end of the plague in Roquebrune since 1467.
The presence of this chapel is interesting, as it allows us both to anchor ourselves in local history and to broaden our horizons. Today, this modest chapel is a landmark for the August 5th Way of the Cross, during which Roquebrunois have for centuries evoked divine protection against the plague. The cult of Saint Roch is present in many villages, either through the presence of oratories or the construction of chapels. From the 15th century onwards, devotion to Saint Roch spread throughout Europe, where severe epidemics, most notably the plague, were rife. Very often, chapels dedicated to the saints who protected populations from the plague were built on the outskirts of towns, like sentinels preventing the scourge from penetrating.
