On August 9, 1919, the Municipal Council of Salon launched a subscription for the construction of a monument to the dead and voted a sum of 10,000 francs for this purpose. The location chosen was the cliff of the St-Roch Cemetery.
Eugène Piron's project was selected, and here is how the artist himself described his project: "The monument, entirely carved out of the rock, represents a breach that seems to access the vault where the dead are deposited. At the entrance of this breach, a bugle sounds the "Sublime Awakening" which brings out the image of those who sleep there.
