A small ancient and mediaeval town, Serres was the most important castellany in Buëch Valley.
The economic boom was fuelled by the Avignon Papacy and the arrival of Jewish traders. Herb-blended Provence salt, weavers, hatters, etc. However, craftsmanship, which was strongly represented by the Protestants, declined in the late 17th century with the mass exodus of groups to Switzerland and Germany to escape the persecutions.
