Standing in a corner, at the intersection of rue de la Mule Noire and the former rue des Jardins (now rue de la Fontaine d'Argent), the Black Mule fountain was built according to the Baroque-influenced plans of Georges Vallon in 1758, with sculptures by Jean Chastel.
Today the water comes from the Verdon and is not carbonised, so that the fountain does not require frequent cleaning.
