Oraison was also one of the key centres of the Bas-Alpine Resistance during the Second World War. On July 16, 1944, caught in a trap set by the occupying forces, the members of the Comité Départemental de Libération, led by Louis Martin Bret, were arrested and imprisoned in Marseille. On July 18, 1944, they were shot at Signes,
in the Var department.
The war goes on for almost five years, with the Germans still occupying almost all of France. The Italian campaign is in full swing and the Allies have landed in Normandy. The Germans face increasing difficulties. In Oraison, only one Italian post is set up at La Brillanne. On July 13, a detachment of German troops moves into our village. Three days later, on Sunday July 16, the members of the Conseil Général de la Résistance met in Oraison; although the meeting was to have been held in Digne, at around 10:30 a.m., trucks carrying militiamen disguised as Resistance fighters arrived in Oraison, blocked the village exits and simulated an attack on a German post.
Believing he was dealing with real resistance fighters, Emile Latil went to the town hall,
replaced the bust of the Republic and tore up the portrait of Pétain.
At around 3:00 pm, the militiamen reveal themselves, arresting the members of the Resistance Council
and, of course, Emile Latil, as well as a number of others, including
including Dr. Daumas André, who had also been framed by these false resistance fighters.
The prisoners were then taken to Marseille, handed over to the Gestapo
and interrogated under torture. On July 18, they were all shot in the Signes
vallon de Signes, where veterans make an annual pilgrimage to honour
pilgrimage to honor their memory. A shepherd who witnessed the massacre
