965 Avenue Albert Roux, 83250 La Londe-les-Maures
Located on the Pansard bridge at the entrance to the town, it was erected in May 1945.
The French and Americans landed on the Var coast on August 15. Forced to withdraw, the Germans stationed at La Londe-les-Maures prepared to destroy the bridges. Louis Bussone, a young Franc Tireur et Partisan Français, plans to sabotage the bridges. The operation to save the Ponsard bridge proved fatal, and he was shot by the enemy on August 17, 1944.
The "Pont des martyrs de la résistance" stele, as indicated by the gilded letters engraved beneath the Lorraine cross, stands at the entrance to the bridge. It keeps alive the memory of the brave deeds of the commune's young resistance fighters.
Two other names appear alongside Louis Bussone. Eugène Oswald, who died in an ambush at the age of 18, and Pierre Rivault, another maquisard, aged 25, who was taken prisoner, tortured and brutally shot.
