Inaugurated in 1926 in the presence of hereditary Prince Hubert II of Savoy, the monument to the deads illustrates the particular history of Tende, being partly in Italian and partly in French.
This imposing bronze statue, the work of sculptor Gaetano Orsolini, is 2.45 m high and rests on a base of 3 m Tende granite blocks and a 50 cm plinth. It depicts an Italian soldier in a heroic pose, ready to face death, reminiscent of Italian Renaissance statues. Similarities with Michelangelo's David can be seen in the upper body, the head carriage and the left hand.
This is not the only war memorial in the commune, as the Aigle monument overlooking the village honours those who died in the Libyan war of 1912.
