Orgon's cultural heritage: Les Remparts.
The western part of Orgon's first ramparts bordered the village of 'La Savoie', nestled at the foot of the château. They linked the Porte de l'Hortet to the Porte du Four de Ville and stood on the current site of the town hall and the church. Some remnants of the wall can still be seen to the left of the town hall, where the seigniorial prison was located.
Orgon grew in size after the 16th century and new ramparts appeared. This second set of surrounding walls was built in 1591, during the Catholic Holy League, a religious war whose apparent aim was to defend the Catholic religion against the Calvinists, but whose real purpose was the conquest of the French throne by the House of Guise. The ramparts are approximately one metre thick and between 6 and 7 metres high; they were built quickly thanks to provincial subsidies.
