Farmers, breeders, traders, conquerors, the Romans were also great builders, with a characteristic road know-how. As a condition for their future growth, the development of land routes was a strategic issue for them. After the Via Domitia, the oldest road in France, it was the Via Julia Augusta that linked Rome to Gaul by the coast.
