Date: 11th, 17th centuries
Period: Middle Ages, classical period
Type : Hospital architecture

In the charitable landscape of Arles, the Saint-Lazare leprosarium enjoyed a longevity uncommon to this type of establishment. Located on the outskirts of the town, on the edge of the Alyscamps necropolis, the establishment first appeared in the Middle Ages and remained in operation until the 18th century. Due to its location, and the architectural interest of its remains, the establishment is today associated with the various projects initiated as part of the redevelopment of the site of the former SNCF workshops.
While the church has disappeared, the hospital building is still relatively legible.
The building forms a quadrilateral around an enclosed courtyard, with two storeys of covered galleries and loggias to the east. To the west, another beautifully laid-out courtyard borders the main courtyard. The single-storey medieval building is characterized by its medium-sized, open-jointed stonework. The southern façade has been preserved, and access is via a door with a semi-circular arcade. Later, a building of large, thin-jointed blockwork was added. This ensemble was largely destroyed or incorporated into the construction of the north building in rubble and fat-jointed blocks. The southern facade features a door with an embrasured lintel and a window, while the upper floor features a door with a chamfered frame and a mullioned transom. A portico with two coved arches links the west wing. The south gable and west facade have been retained. On the first floor, the central room, divided by dividing walls, opens onto the exterior through a round-arched doorway facing a large arcade overlooking the central courtyard.
