On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the landings, the Liberation and Victory, the Department of Var wished to highlight its own landing. The Provence Landings, too often relegated to the background, sometimes even forgotten.
Yet it is a historical fact that Operation Dragoon had a considerable impact. Strategically successful and militarily triumphant, it played a crucial role in the liberation of France and in its international standing after the Second World War. With 260,000 French troops on the front line—General de Lattre de Tassigny’s Army B—out of the 400,000 who landed, the Provence Landings marked France’s return: its strength and its honor restored.
It is to shine a light on these French fighters, from mainland France and from beyond, the resistance members, and the courageous women and men who helped liberate the country—without overlooking the role of the Allies—that the Department of Var created Var 1944 – The Roads of Freedom in the Var. This long-term project, promoting the duty of remembrance through a range of initiatives, will continue beyond the year 2024. (Le Département)
