Built in the 16th century on the medieval ramparts, the clock tower is topped with a finely crafted campanile.
The tower was built on the ramparts in the 16th century, when the town started to spread beyond the fortified walls. Its role was to keep watch over the surrounding area and to warn the population if danger approached. So it featured a lookout platform and, above it, a wrought-iron campanile which supported an alarm bell.
Campaniles were built only by towns that had been authorised by the lords to govern themselves on the basis of charters. A campanile was a sign of an independent community.
