Discover the Cassis Fishing Tribunal: a unique historic site where maritime tradition and history meet. A must-see for lovers of culture and history.
Located along the Port on Quai Barthélemy, it bears witness to the commune's long-dominant activity, and to the struggle of the Cassidens to escape the "despotic, tyrannical, onerous, suspicious and abusive" jurisdiction of Marseille's prud'hommes. This right was granted in 1791.
The façade features a niche housing a polychrome wooden statue of Saint Pierre, patron saint of the Confrérie des pêcheurs, restored in 1984.
The statue is traditionally carried in procession to the church on the last Sunday in June, on the occasion of Saint Peter's Day. The ceremony is followed by a blessing at sea for all boats, and a tribute to sailors who have lost their lives.
