The desire to create a monument commemorating Queen Victoria's stay in Menton in 1882 emerged in the British community at the beginning of the 20th century, in particular under the impetus of Sir Thomas Hanbury. It was not until the end of the 1930s that it became a reality. The square in which it was to be located was laid out in 1938 and the monument was unveiled in April 1939.
