Make a detour to Saintes Maries de la Mer, this city "on the sand" is home to a large part of the Camargue national reserve. The access is done by crossing the landscapes of the Camargue, a change of scenery guaranteed!
The city was built by the sea, in the delta of the Rhone (Camargue delta), between the marshes and the Mediterranean. This considerably limits the cultivation of crops but was favourable for grazing. Thus, horses and bulls are undoubtedly part of the landscape and the life of the people of Saint-Etienne and are associated with festivals throughout the year.
Also, when one moves away from the historical center, one crosses on the road the "cabanes de gardian", modest residences of the gardians, the fishermen, the salt workers, the paluniers and the shepherds.
