and "sound magician".

Considered as the "father" of the symphony, Joseph Haydn would
experiment with this genre throughout his life, composing over a hundred such works. In the early 1760s, he wrote Symphony No. 36, a brilliant, elegant work. It is in tribute to this great master of the great 18th-century tradition that Brahms composed his Variations on a Theme by Hayden in 1873, having already published cycles of variations on the works of Schumann, Handel and Paganini.
