A few kilometers from downtown Marseille as the crow flies, the beach of the Calanque de Sormiou invites you into the paradisiacal setting of the Calanques National Park, in the heart of enchanting landscapes.
The beach of the calanque of Sormiou must be earned! During the off-season, you can get there by a narrow and winding road, which winds between the valleys covered with scrubland and white limestone rocks. During the summer season, the road is closed to car traffic. You trade your car for a pair of walking shoes.
But your efforts are never in vain. You discover, nestled in the hollow of the cove, the huts of a small fishing village that seems to escape from another time. You forget the noises of the city, to let you rock by the lapping of the turquoise water, and the laughter of the children who play at the edge of water.
The beach of the calanque of Sormiou, with a length of 200 meters, offers a water of a great cleanliness, where the marine life abounds. You can swim, or practice snorkeling. You can also leave from here to discover the calanques by sea kayak.
You can also enhance your day at the beach by strolling among the picturesque huts, contemplating the boats that dance on the waves, or offer you a gourmet stop at the restaurant Le Château, located at the bottom of the cove.
PRACTICAL INFORMATION
The beach of Sormiou hosts a first aid post in summer, which ensures the supervision of the bathing. Toilets are available on site.
The traffic conditions are particularly strict in the creeks, with a ban during the summer season or in case of bad weather conditions (hot weather, strong wind). The descent on foot requires appropriate equipment: walking shoes, drinking water, hat or cap and sunglasses, energy bars.
