Olive mill Itinerary - Saint Augustin Mill in Oppède-Coustellet

This stone building, part of which dates back to the 7th century, belonged to the monks at Senanque abbey until the 13th century. A flour mill once existed here. The work was placed under the protection of Saint Augustin. When the mill was renovated in the 18th century, the canal which brought water from the Calavon river already existed. There is both an olive oil mill and a flour mill here.
Here I am in the very heart of the valley of Calavon river, which meanders and irrigates the entire Apt basin, all the way to the Durance river.The land is open, framed by the Luberon range to the south and the Monts de Vaucluse to the north, which create a very reassuring landscape. The entire setting is a patchwork of vineyards, separated from time to time by rows of cypress which create interesting perspectives. The olive groves have a very discreet presence among the vines and cherry orchards. I have to take the old Roman road, the "Via Domitia", along the D900 to the village Les Beaumettes to actually see the olive trees. In the other direction, 3 km to the west, I reach the hamlet of Coustellet.
