This larch-lined balcony hike follows the Canal de la Cime to the hamlet of Les Combes. At the gateway to the Partias reserve, this canal is not visible in winter, but makes for a pleasant hike away from the busy itineraries.

Park in the large parking lot at the entrance to Puy-Chalvin, then walk to the top of the village.
At the last house, continue along the wide track leading to the hamlet of Les Combes: after a few metres, take a small, well-marked path on the left of the track: this gradually winds up, to intersect the Les Combes track a second time a little further on.

Continue upwards: this path overhangs the Combes track below, heading towards Partias: the path soon leads to a wider, slightly steep path: start climbing this steep path for a few metres, which soon leads to the start of the canal:
At the fork in the path, take the left-hand track, the start of which is marked by the Canal de la Cime sign. The path then continues flat along the canal, overhanging the track leading to the Chalets des Combes.
Continue until you reach the heights of the hamlet, then on to an isolated house above the hamlet: at this point, leave the track and descend to the left of the house to reach the chalets.
Follow the Combes trail back down to the starting point.
Be careful, in winter the canal is snow-covered, making it difficult to see: be sure not to stray from the tracks or you will sink into the snow and into the canal's watercourse.
If you want to make the most of the sunshine, start your hike in the morning.
Progressing on snow-covered terrain is much more demanding than in summer, and requires special equipment and knowledge of mountain hazards.
An ungroomed itinerary may require you to "follow the trail", so you'll need to be in good physical condition and well-prepared for your outing.
