A village with streets at right angles... Just like New York! A village with streets at right angles... Just like New York! Charleval is an undeniably atypical site set bordering the river Durance, whose layout is quite unlike those of Provence's typical hilltop or shell-shaped villages. Founded in the 18th century, when the land bordering the river was first used to grow crops, Charleval and its terraced "agricultural" houses are the starting point for this delightful walk in the heart of the area's ancient forest and hills. Hidden away among these valleys, woods and mountain passes are two magnificent old properties that formerly belonged to the local seigneurs: Valbonnette and Bonneval-Taillades. The first was part of Silvacane abbey and the second owes its reputation to its 19th century vocation as a silkworm farm. But these are just some of the attractions you will enjoy on this walk interspersed with delightful viewpoints, combining the pleasures of nature and human prowess: to the east, you will come across the ancient village of Vernègues and the TGV (high speed train) viaduct. Further east again is the sumptuous Pont-Royal golf course, set against the backdrop of the Alpilles mountain chain. And to the south, you can admire the gentle outline of the Luberon set behind the fertile Durance valley.
