At the foot of the Dormillouse summit, the pastoral Col Bas mountain is home to some of the most beautiful lakes in the Ubaye. Rare Alpine newts live in their cold waters.
From the hamlet of Villard, the trail climbs through the forest in a series of switchbacks, then across alpine pastures to the three lakes of Col Bas.
The return journey follows a trail opposite the outward route, with switchback descents, back to the hamlet of Villard.
