Discover Volonne through its picturesque streets steeped in a rich historical past. This route will take you to Saint-Martin Church, a major example of early Romanesque architecture (11th century).
The Church of Saint Martin, adjacent to the old cemetery, was the parish church of Volonne from the Middle Ages until the early 16th century. Today, all that remains of this venerable sanctuary, which was destroyed by fire around 1830, are moving ruins exposed to the open sky. Cleared in 1966-67 by the Alpes de Lumière movement and subsequently consolidated, they were listed as a historic monument in 1971. The church has a basilica layout without a transept, consisting of a nave and two aisles with five bays each, ending in an apse and two semi-circular apsidioles, all three with cul-de-four vaults.
