ITINERARY:
1. Take the "rue du Four Neuf" uphill on the right to reach the "Chemin des Granges", the Old Tower overlooking the village. Be sure to close the fence if grazing is in progress. Admire the view of the Tumuli de Chevignières and the old village site. Go back down the same path and pass the Four Banal. Take the road on the right towards the hamlet of Grand Larra. Cross the village and leave it by the west. Continue on the road
2. At the crow's feet, take the right-hand descending road. Pass near the Thomasse to reach the Grand Larra. To discover the historical heritage of the place, pass in front of the communal oven and walk around the Chapelle Saint Antoine
3. Leave the hamlet from the south along the arrival road. Turn left at the first intersection, towards Les Cordeliers, then right at the next crow's feet. The road becomes a farm track through the fields. This ancient Roman road, the Via Cotta Per Alpem, crosses the Alps. An explanatory sign awaits the walker near the place called Pré Bellot, at the crossroads. Continue straight on until you reach "Les Paris"
4. When you reach the "Paris-Ictodurus" farm, an explanatory panel explains the richness of this place. Turn right to go up to the village of La Bâtie-Vieille on a track in very good condition.
A LITTLE HISTORY:
A former bastide, which gave it its name, La Bâtie-Vieille is dominated by a 12th century watchtower, which is its main heritage feature and gives it its uniqueness. All that remains today is this 11th century watchtower of the old fortified site. Erected on a mound, it is located in a favourable position for monitoring the valley, where defence is facilitated by three steep sides. Here the houses were built on one side only, thus benefiting from the protection of the castle. The oblong tower is domed on the attack side and flat on the dwelling side, a rather rare shape for a medieval keep.
Crossed to the south by an old pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela, La Bâtie-Vieille benefits from an unspoilt environment, sheltered from view.
