From the hamlet of La Monta, take the path on the left, a little past the chapel, staying on the road (towards l'Echalp). After crossing the hay meadows among the marmots, enter the mélézin and then emerge into the mountain pasture to reach the border pass. A little further up are the ruins of a Napoleon refuge. And no, he didn't pass through here, he just wanted to thank the people of the Haute-Alpes for their welcome. This pass used to be used for trade (more or less legal) between France...

Don't forget to head down to the Jervis refuge to sample some typical northern Italian dishes. You can return via the Echalp and then the track on the other side of the Guil to the starting point.
