You're standing on the borders of the former Comtat Venaissin. Before its final reunion with France in 1791, and before it became Vaucluse. The Comtat had been administered by papal legates for several centuries, but was increasingly hemmed in by the French royal power, established in Dauphiné, Baronnies and Provence. Mollans-sur-Ouvèze was the border, more or less watertight, in the gap in the mountains opened by the Ouvèze.
